Why is the Attic Leaking Water?
A leaking attic can be associated with many possible causes including prolonged wetness in the attic, which can rot the roof sheathing, contributing to mold development that could cause pollution of indoor air quality if allowed to enter your living space. Your attic is a very important aspect of your home because it prevents moisture and outside weather from entering your home. Ensuring that your attic is well managed is the answer to why is attic leaking water.
Here are some possible explanations if your attic is leaking water:
1. Inadequate Ventilation
If there is inadequate ventilation in your home and the vapor barriers, air barriers and insulation are weak, condensation can build up in your attic, which freeze or frost against the inside of your cold roof. Then when the ice or frost melts, you will have excess water in your attic. This will cause your attic to eventually leak water.
2. Damaged Attic
Major damage to your attic in winter can happen if there are dramatic temperature swings in combination with a warm indoor temperature, forming an ice dam. An ice dam is formed when warm, moist air breaks out from the interior of the home into the attic hollow space, and causes part of your roof to rise above 32 degrees F. When this happens, some of the snow on your roof can melt and begin to travel to the edge of the roof. If the edge of the roof is below 32 degrees F, the water will freeze again, causing a damn, which prevents any other melted snow from leaving the roof. Then it pools and can cause a leak.
3. Protracted Wetness in Attic
If there is protracted wetness in an attic, this will rot the roof sheathing and cause mould development that can eventually cause pollution of indoor air quality if left to penetrate the living space. If your roof itself is leaking into the attic, it could cause extensive water damage in your home. It can penetrate through your ceiling and down the wall cavities.
When this occurs, it means that your roof needs repair. Furthermore, you will need to replace drywall, wet insulation, and other building materials because mould needs as little as 24 hours to start growing under these conditions.
4. Leaking Roof
If your roof has been damaged for any reason and has a leak, this will cause serious water damage in your home. In winter, a leak, in combination with an ice dam can cause water to enter through your ceiling and down the hollow spaces in the walls. The ice accumulation starts to form on the shingles very close to the point where the exterior wall and the overhang (soffit) intercept.
There will be no place for the water to drain once the ice dam has formed, and if plenty of water builds up, it will settle at the back of the dam below the shingles and leak into the wall hollow space and inside of your home.
The best approach and answer to why is attic leaking water is for you not to compromise the quality and integrity of your attic roof. If you notice any leak, continuous wetness in an attic, damaged or inadequate ventilation on the roof, do not cut corners by doing the repair yourself. Rather call a professional in Edmonton to fix the problem and make sure it is done right.
